Photo of the Day: The Burano Nobody Photographs

A back street on Burano, away from the main canal circuit: laundry strung between a pink facade and an orange one, a satellite dish bolted above a blue house, the cobblestones empty. No lace shops. No restaurant menus propped outside. No one selling anything. This is what about two-thirds of Burano actually looks like, and most visitors never find it because the ten-minute walk from the vaporetto to the photogenic canal already feels like the whole island. It nearly is. On what these islands are and aren't: Murano and Burano Are Beautiful for About Five Minutes.
